EPOC, Exercise Afterburn | Timothy Valentin
EPOC, Exercise Afterburn | Timothy Valentin
Exercise Afterburn or EPOC (Excess Post-Exercisce Oxygen Consumption) refers to the body's need for more oxygen after exercise. EPOC effect is most prevalent within 3 hours (depends on study some show the effect lasting over 30 hours) after exercise, there is a distinctly measurable increase in oxygen intake by the body. This is the body's attempt to restore things back to "normal" after exercise.
Another purpose of EPOC is to fuel the body's increase metabolism due to the increase in body temperature that occurred during exercise.
The Les Mills Combat exercise program takes advantage of this phenominon by using "High Intensity Interval Training--HIIT." During each workout you will experience peaks and valleys in the intensity of the exercise.

I used this program to drop over 10 pounds in 60 days and get in the best shape of my life. Lots of variety and lots of fun! I love it and highly recommend it to all of my friends and customers.
See you in the gym!

Exercise Afterburn
In order for the body to return to a "resting state" hormones must be rebalanced, fuel store replenished, and cells repaired. The increased intake of oxygen is also necessary to convert the lactic acid that formed during exercise back to pyruvic acid.Another purpose of EPOC is to fuel the body's increase metabolism due to the increase in body temperature that occurred during exercise.
So How do you increase the EPOC effect?
Anaerobic exercise has been shown to increase the EPOC effect dramatically. Participants in this type of exercise demonstrated an increase in fat burned while consuming fewer calories--you get more bang for your buck. The Les Mills Combat exercise program takes advantage of this phenominon by using "High Intensity Interval Training--HIIT." During each workout you will experience peaks and valleys in the intensity of the exercise.

Dealing With Injuries | Timothy Valentin
Dealing With Injuries | Timothy Valentin
Are you dealing with injuries? I have been dealing with a knee injury for the last six months and have finally gotten it to a point where are can start doing some of my favorite workout activities. I ran across this video from Beachbody and thought that is was very timely and decided to share it with you.
I could have used some of this advice about six months ago but better late that never. The video also covers some diet considerations as well as what workouts you can do.
The long and short of it is he told me not to do a martial arts workout (Les Mills Combat) but to ride bike and go for walks.
I would go for walks of about 2 miles and when finished wrap the knee in ice to keep the swelling down. I found that bike riding was less stressful on my knee, so I decided to do more of that.
Eventually my knee started to get stronger and now I am able to take a full stride when I walk and I have started up my Les Mills Combat workouts again. I am not going at it quite as intensely as I was before but I am a week into and the knee still feels good and seems to be getting stronger.

Now that I am nearing full recovery, I have increased the amount of stretching that I do to make sure my muscles and joints are ready for action and so far so good. I have finished my first week of Les Mills Combat and have had some soreness but the knee is holding up.
I hope the video gives you some ideas on how you can deal with your injuries. My advice to you, be patient and do plenty of stretching (or even some foam rolling).

My recovery
For me I waited about 3 months after the injury before I broke down and visited my doctor. He basically grabbed my leg and said "Does this hurt?" Yes!! was my answer. The long and short of it is he told me not to do a martial arts workout (Les Mills Combat) but to ride bike and go for walks.

Dealing with injuries: Changes in my routines
I injured my knee doing Yoga, switching between positions, something I normally have no problem doing. It was just one of those freak injuries. Then I got careless and injured the knee further operating my snowblower last winter, I could hardly walk. I used ice, heat, ibuprofen and a knee brace to make it through my day.Now that I am nearing full recovery, I have increased the amount of stretching that I do to make sure my muscles and joints are ready for action and so far so good. I have finished my first week of Les Mills Combat and have had some soreness but the knee is holding up.

Flexible Workouts | Timothy Valentin
Flexible Workouts | Timothy Valentin
I love flexible workouts, some days I have a little more time and would like to get in a longer workout. This is one of the things that I like most about the 10 Minute Trainer workout program developed by Tony Horton for Beachbody.

Tony Horton's training style come through each workout so I you like P90X but cannot handle the intensity, give the 10 minute trainer a try. You can purchase it here: 10 Minute Trainer.
I hope to see you in the gym!

Each Segment is 10 Minutes Long
Each workout in the ten minute trainer workout system is, well, 10 minutes long. It does come with a workout schedule so if you don't like to make up your own schedule. You can elect to run all workouts on each disc or just an individual workout. You can also run a quick 2 minute warm up and cool down before and after each workout.Tony Horton's training style come through each workout so I you like P90X but cannot handle the intensity, give the 10 minute trainer a try. What it takes to be fit as a Marvel Comic Book Hero. | Timothy Valentin
What it takes to be fit as a Marvel Comic Book Hero. | Timothy Valentin
I am in my "Man Cave" watching the movie Thor and wondering what it takes to be a super fit super hero--"fit as a Marvel Comic Book Hero?" Granted the actors playing the parts aren't super heroes themselves but they need to look the part, after all there is only so much you can do with Photoshop.
As for diet, not just eating right but adding in supplements to ensure proper nutrition so the body can meeting the demands of a rigorous workout schedule.
Beachbody workouts
One of the things I like most about Beachbody's workout programs is they come with a meal plan that is design to provide the nutrition that your body needs. Great workouts paired with the proper nutrition equals great results.

Until next time eat right, stay healthy!

What it takes
There are two components to getting in great shape, exercise and diet. First exercise, intense workouts as long a 2.5 to three hours per day consisting of weight training, cardio and almost always some form of martial art.As for diet, not just eating right but adding in supplements to ensure proper nutrition so the body can meeting the demands of a rigorous workout schedule.
Any fitness plan
As with the super hero, us everyday average people need exercise and proper nutrition to maintain a healthy lifestyle. You may not engage in the demanding workout programs as some of these stars do but you do need to match up your diet to your workout.Fad diets
I have seen may Fad diets come and go. People on them have had limited success but often find that they cannot maintain status guo. Make sure whatever plan you come up with is something you can stick with.Beachbody workouts

My Favorite Workouts
Les Mills Combat and P90X3 are my two favorite workout programs. They combine all of the components of the rigorous programs used by the superheros but are designed for the "Mortal" humans like you and me.Until next time eat right, stay healthy!

Best Juicing Tips | Home health and fitness
Best Juicing Tips | Home health and fitness
Best Juicing Tips: It is well known in nutrition circles that that the juice of fruits and vegetable are good for overall health. Juicing can improve your life in many ways, from boosting your energy to making your heart healthier. Use the following tips to be more successful in your juicing efforts.
Dark leafy greens benefit from the addition of a cucumber when juicing. Some leafy greens do not taste good. Cucumber can mask the taste and also add a refreshing twist to your juice. Using the cucumber with the peel on will also add extra nutrition to your drink.
If you are juicing due to a health concern, start with dark green veggies as the base for your juice. Dark vegetables, including broccoli, chard or spinach, should constitute as much as 75 percent of your juices. You can use strawberries or another sweet fruit to even it out and to make sure that it’s a great-tasting mix.
If juicing is part of your health regimen, the best ingredients to juice include green veggies like spinach, broccoli, kale, chard and other such vegetables. To get the most benefits, use at least 50% green vegetables in your juice drink. To add more flavor to your green vegetable juice add other vegetables or fruit. Fruit juices may taste sweeter, but compared to green veggies, they come at a steep price in sugar and calories, meaning they’re not as healthy.
You can use juice as a meal replacement. This will make a lot of sense when you look at the large amount of food that you will need to create a single glass of juice. Treating juice as a meal replacement allows your body to quickly absorb nutrients into your bloodstream.
You probably already knew that juicing vegetables and fruits can work wonders for your overall health. Apply these tips and start experimenting with your juicer to create new and interesting flavors. There’s never been a better time to add juicing to your daily life.
